Off The Beaten Track 2020 Summer Field School for Anthropologists and Social Scientists

Dear colleagues and friends,

Please find below our call for scholarship applications. The Off The Beaten Track program, with 14 years and 29 editions on its counter, is the longest standing cultural anthropology field school in the world. Just as every year, we are proud to make this historic program more accessible thanks to a sizable scholarship fund.

We primarily rely on word of mouth communication about our program, so it is of great help to us if you would share this information with students and anyone else who may be interested. We have attached a .pdf brochure for easy dissemination.

More information on the project can be found at:https://www.anthropologyfieldschool.org

To go directly to the scholarship section and application form,https://anthropologyfieldschool.org/generalinformation/scholarship/scholarship.html. And of course, you can contact me personally (on my personal email sam.janssen[at]xpeditions[dot]be) if you have any further questions.

Cordially,

Sam Janssen

SCHOLARSHIP CALL

This call is aimed at budding researchers with creative and open minds interested in the challenges of applied research. We offer a unique learning opportunity in a multidisciplinary research project on the isle of Gozo, Malta. Expeditions and the University of Leuven offer a 20.000 euro (±22,000 USD or ±160.000 CNY) scholarship fund to cover part or all of the tuition fees for selected participants of the 2020 Malta Summer School. Scholarships are granted on a competitive basis and based on a research proposal.

Call directed at

• Undergraduate and graduate students

• PhD students and candidates

• Everyone with a genuine interest in cultural anthropology

• Previous participants of the project

Selection is not based on previous academic merit or project complexity.

We aim for enthusiasm, dedication and creativity. In past years, students who were not enrolled in an anthropology program also received scholarships for the program.

Selection Procedure In the first phase, candidates are invited to propose two or more creative research concepts that can be built upon through fieldwork performed during one session of the summer school on Gozo (Malta). For the second phase, the scholarship review board will select 15 to 20 candidates from these submissions to work out a more detailed research plan within a deadline of two months. These final proposals will be ranked and scholarships will be divided according to this ranking. The top ranked proposals will be granted a full scholarship, while others will receive a partial scholarship. None of the scholarships include airfare to or from Malta.

How can I apply for this initial selection?

• Send us two or more research concepts

• 150-250 words per research concept

• Submitting can only be done through this online form

• The deadline for submissions (first stage) is January 5th, 2020

Please visit our website for more detailed information.

Please note that the number of students accepted in the program is limited. Scholarships will be granted only after the completion of the selection procedure, while registration is open to non-scholarship participants. In case you wish to join the project even if you do not receive a scholarship, we advise to register through the regular procedure as early as possible since non-scholarship slots are usually filled by the end of December.
