The book is based on the author’s PhD thesis and deals with children’s economic role in rural as well as urban working class families in Austria during the late 19th, the early 20th centuries and the interwar period. The study makes extensive use of autobiographical records as well as statistical surveys and labour inspectors’reports. This study deals with children’s everyday lives, experiences and education in mountainous rural Greece during the early 20^th century and the interwar period, and, among other, connects the history of rural children with that of the making of middle classes in Greece. It argues for the history of children and childhood being an integrated part of social history. Drawing extensively on interviews made by the author, the book is mainly an oral history study, combining oral evidence with local archival records.

This book is a microhistorical study on the history of nineteenth century german speaking tramping artisans. It deals with the cases of two Austrian confectioners who travel as journeymen all over Europe during the 1840s and the 1860s. It examines the extensive autobiographical records (including a diary) left behind and explores aspects of work, social class, national, religious and gender identities. Among other the study argues for integrating the history of nationalism as well as gender history in the history of artisans.
